Elections in Romania

Experts analyse the situation in Romania

Romania is gearing up for pivotal elections in November and December 2024, featuring both presidential and parliamentary contests. The parliamentary election will take place on 1 December, coinciding with Romania's National Day, while the second round of the presidential election is scheduled for 8 December. These elections will play a crucial role in shaping the country's political landscape for years to come.

The outcome of both elections remains uncertain following the unexpected first-place finish of nationalist right-wing populist Călin Georgescu in the first round of the presidential elections. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned as chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) after securing only third place in the same round. While earlier polls predicted a PSD victory at the parliamentary elections, the situation has now become highly unpredictable – also because opinion polls have repeatedly been wrong.

Just one day after the parliamentary elections and a few days ahead of the presidential runoff, we will analyse these exciting developments with four experts on Romania.
