Ukraine Solidarity Day: Applying a gender lens to Ukraine’s reconstruction

Discussion on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine

The third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine comes at a moment of profound uncertainty. While discussions of a potential ceasefire have emerged, the war and its devastating consequences persist. Beyond the immediate military and geopolitical dimensions, the social impacts of the war must remain a central focus. Millions of Ukrainians have endured immense hardship. Their voices must shape the reconstruction process.

A key priority is guaranteeing that Ukrainian women play a central role in rebuilding their country. Women have been at the forefront of humanitarian response, community resilience, and economic driver, yet their perspectives and leadership remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces. Their vision, challenges, and priorities must be actively heard and integrated across all spheres of the reconstruction process and future political events.

This discussion will serve as a crucial step in shaping a comprehensive and forward-looking reconstruction strategy—one that prioritizes social justice and gender equality.

The event and a set of six policy briefs are part of the project Progressive Paths to Rebuild Ukraine. The project has been owned by the Karl-Renner-Institut, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), and several other social-democratic foundations. The partners have worked directly with a network of Ukrainian women academics and policy experts, both in Ukraine and exile. The six policy briefs focus on the main policy challenges in the current context in Ukraine, including labour rights, housing, education, gender equality, and social protection.
